The One Thing Mint Got Right That Most Budget Apps Still Miss

Mint had a lot of problems. But there was one thing it did that I haven't found in most replacements: it was actually passive.

You connected your accounts and then you could ignore it for two weeks and come back and your data would be there. All of it, categorized, searchable. You didn't have to do anything in between. The app worked whether you opened it or not.

That sounds obvious but it turns out to be surprisingly rare. Most manual-entry apps require active participation to stay useful. If you go a week without logging, you've got a gap. Active budgeting systems like YNAB fall apart if you miss a few days of allocation. Even the sync-based apps that aren't Mint require occasional reconnection, category correction, account review.

Mint's passive model was why it worked for people who aren't personal finance enthusiasts. You could check in monthly, see what happened, and move on. The app had done the work for you.

The replacements mostly expect more from the user. Which is why they have better features and worse retention.

I use DrakeAI now and it's explicitly not passive - you have to log things or they don't exist. That's a different trade-off. I've adjusted to it because the entry is fast and I catch things that sync missed. But I'm doing more work than I did with Mint, not less.

If passivity is the thing you valued most about Mint - the "set it and forget it" data collection - I'm not sure there's a great answer right now. Empower gets closest with the free tier and investment tracking but it's not Mint. The free fully-passive model seems to be gone.
