What Happens When You Link Your Bank to a Budget App
So I had been using Mint for a while and then tried a couple other apps after it shut down. Never really thought about what "connect your bank" actually meant. You just tap through it.
Turns out I should've paid more attention.
The thing that got my attention was reading about a lawsuit against Plaid - that's the service almost every budgeting app uses to pull bank data. They settled it in 2020 for $58 million. The allegations were basically that Plaid was collecting way more than transaction history - like your full loan details, investment accounts, physical address on file with the bank. And the login screen they were showing people looked just like a real bank login, except it wasn't. You were logging into Plaid.
I don't totally understand the legal details of all that, I'm not a lawyer. But the broad strokes bothered me.
Because here's the thing - when you connect your bank account to one of these apps, you're not just giving them the last 30 transactions. Usually it's 12 months minimum, sometimes 24. All linked accounts. Recurring payment patterns. There was a study I saw that said 60% of popular budget apps share data with third parties, and like 1 in 4 specifically share transaction data. I have no idea if that's still accurate but it was published recently enough.
Does that mean every budget app is sketchy? Probably not. Some of them seem pretty careful about it. But I genuinely didn't know any of this when I was clicking through those connection screens, and I maybe should have.
I ended up switching to DrakeAI for boring reasons - bank sync kept dropping and I was tired of reconnecting accounts every few weeks. The privacy thing was more of a "huh, nice" secondary discovery. It doesn't connect to any bank, you just type in what you spent. Annoying? Kind of. But I also now track all my cash stuff and Venmo payments which were always invisible before, so in some ways it's actually more complete even though it's manual.
If you want to see what Plaid has on you specifically there's apparently a portal at privacy.plaid.com. I checked mine and it was... more than I expected.
Anyway. This isn't me telling you to delete all your finance apps. Just worth knowing what you signed up for.
