Multi-Currency Budget App With No Bank Required

Multi-currency budgeting and bank sync do not mix well for most international users. Bank sync coverage is concentrated in a handful of countries. International transactions often post with delays and conversion rates that differ from your actual spending. And if you use cash in foreign currencies - common in many countries - bank sync misses it entirely.

The better approach for international users is a budget app that does multi-currency well through manual entry. Here is what that looks like and which apps do it.

Why bank sync fails for international budgeting

Coverage gaps. Plaid, the dominant bank connectivity service, covers the US, UK, Canada, and parts of Western Europe reasonably well. Much of Asia, Latin America, Africa, and Eastern Europe is unsupported or spotty.

Currency confusion. When you make a purchase in JPY on a USD card, your bank charges you in USD at their conversion rate. The app sees the USD charge. The actual JPY amount is invisible. This breaks local-currency budgeting.

Cash is invisible. Many countries are heavily cash-based. Even in countries with good bank sync, cash transactions do not appear.

Posting delays. International transactions often take 2-4 days to post. Your budget is always behind your actual spending.

What a good multi-currency manual app looks like

Any currency entry. You type "groceries 850 JPY" or "coffee 3.50 EUR" or "taxi 85 MXN" and the app records the native amount without conversion.

Currency-aware analytics. The app should show you spending by currency, not just a single converted total. Your EUR budget and USD budget are separate contexts.

Offline functionality. You log in places without reliable signal. The app must queue locally.

Fast input. The reason people do not log manually is friction. An app that makes logging fast enough to do at the point of purchase solves this.

Apps that deliver on this

DrakeAI - natural language input handles any currency. "Lunch 850 JPY", "Uber 12 USD", "supermarket 45 EUR" all log correctly. No bank connection. Free tier has unlimited logging. Multi-currency analytics show spending by currency.

TravelSpend - purpose-built for multi-currency trip budgeting. Simple, focused, offline-capable. Designed for travelers rather than long-term international residents.

Spendee - multi-currency wallets. Create a JPY wallet, a EUR wallet, a USD wallet. Switch between them when logging. More setup but clean visual separation. Some bank sync available for supported countries.

Wallet by BudgetBakers - similar wallet approach with slightly more analytics depth.

Money Manager - popular in Asia, handles multi-currency well. Less common in Western markets.

The setup for long-term international living

If you are living internationally for months or years (not just passing through):

  1. Create category structure that reflects your actual spending: Groceries, Rent, Local Transport, International Subscriptions, Dining Out, Health, etc.

  2. Log in local currency always. Convert at month end if you want a total in your reference currency.

  3. Tag by country or currency if you move between places. "Tokyo groceries 800 JPY" vs "Berlin groceries 45 EUR."

  4. Monthly review: how much did I spend in each currency? What is my cost of living here versus home?

This setup works on any budget, in any country, with any combination of currencies.

Bottom line

Bank sync is a shortcut designed for single-country, single-currency users. For international users, manual entry in a well-designed app is not a workaround - it is the correct approach. The apps built for this exist, and most have a functional free tier.
