How to Track Expenses Across 3 Countries Without a Bank Sync

If you live across multiple countries - or even just travel frequently - bank-sync budgeting apps create more problems than they solve.

Your accounts are in different countries. Plaid does not support all of them. Currency conversion rates change constantly. The app shows everything in USD when you are actually spending in euros and pesos. When sync fails (and it will), you have gaps in your history that take weeks to notice.

Why bank sync fails for multi-country life

Bank sync was designed for people with one bank account in one country, spending in one currency. It works fine for that use case.

For anyone else, the problems stack up:

Coverage gaps. Plaid and similar services cover US, UK, Canada, and parts of Western Europe reasonably well. Southeast Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe - coverage drops off fast.

Currency reporting. When you make a purchase in yen with a dollar card, the app sees the USD charge. The actual yen amount is invisible.

Sync lag. International transactions often take 2-4 days to post. Your app shows you a budget that is always a few days behind reality.

A system that works without bank sync

The simplest reliable system is manual logging in a single-currency-agnostic app.

Log at purchase, not later. The moment you pay, open the app and type or speak the expense. "Lunch 18 EUR" or "taxi Bangkok 120 baht" or "groceries 3400 yen."

Use the local currency. Log what you actually paid in the currency you paid it. Do not convert at time of entry.

One note per trip segment. If you move between countries within a month, tag expenses by location. "Coffee 3.5 EUR [Berlin]" vs "Coffee 2.5 USD [NYC]" makes comparison easy.

Monthly review by country. At month end, look at what you spent in each country.

Apps that work for this

DrakeAI handles multi-currency logging cleanly. You type the expense in natural language - "dinner 45 EUR Rome" - and it records the amount, currency, and merchant. No bank account needed. Works in any currency.

Notion or Airtable are flexible if you prefer a database approach. More setup, full customization.

Google Sheets still works for people who are comfortable with spreadsheets.

Bottom line

Tracking expenses across multiple countries does not require a bank sync. It requires a system you will actually use - fast logging, any currency, no account connections to break.
