Best Expense Tracker for Travelers Who Use Multiple Currencies

Travel expense tracking sounds simple until you are on day three of a trip through three countries and your budgeting app is showing everything converted into USD at rates that differ from what you actually paid.

For travelers who move between currencies frequently, the standard app stack breaks down fast. Here is what to look for and which apps handle this well.

The multi-currency tracking problem

When you travel internationally, your spending is in local currencies. EUR in Europe, JPY in Japan, THB in Thailand. But most apps want to show you everything in your home currency.

The conversion problem is that exchange rates change daily. An app that converts your yen spending at today's rate will show a different number than what you actually spent in dollar terms. For budgeting, you want the rate at the time of purchase - which most apps do not track.

Worse, automatic bank sync often shows you the charged amount in your home currency (what your bank charged after conversion) - which includes bank fees and can be hours after the actual transaction.

What to look for

Log in local currency. The ability to enter an expense in the currency you actually paid (JPY, EUR, THB) rather than forcing conversion at entry.

No bank connection required. International bank accounts rarely sync well. Manual logging in local currency is more accurate than automatic import from a bank doing its own conversion.

Multiple currency support. The app should support logging in at least 20-30 common currencies without needing to configure anything.

Per-currency analytics. Ideally you want to see: "I spent 45,000 JPY in Japan, 320 EUR in Germany, and 1,200 USD at home." Not everything collapsed into one converted number.

Offline support. You are often logging in places with no signal.

Apps worth trying

DrakeAI - type expenses in any currency using natural language. "Dinner 4500 JPY" or "coffee 3.50 EUR" or "taxi 120 THB" all work. No bank connection needed. Multi-currency logging in the free tier.

TravelSpend - purpose-built for travel budgets. You set a daily budget and track spending in local currencies per country. Simple, focused, works offline. Limited analytics beyond daily budget tracking.

Trail Wallet - iOS, designed for travel budgets by country. Clean interface, local currency entry. No bank sync. Good for simple trip budgeting.

Spendee - supports multi-currency wallets. You can create a separate wallet for each currency and switch between them. More complex setup but works well once configured.

The approach that works for long trips

For trips over 2 weeks crossing multiple countries:

  1. Log every expense in local currency at time of purchase
  2. Include a brief country tag: "Tokyo street food 800 JPY Japan"
  3. Review at week end - total spending per country in local currency
  4. At end of trip - look at category breakdowns per destination

This gives you a clear picture of where you actually spent money and on what, without the confusion of cross-currency conversion distorting the numbers.

Budget by day, not by trip

For travel budget management, tracking daily spend in local currency is more useful than a single trip budget in home currency.

You know that you want to spend under $80/day equivalent in Japan. You can look at today's yen total and quickly sense whether you are on track. This is easier than tracking against a converted trip total.

Bottom line

Multi-currency travel expense tracking works best with manual local-currency entry and no bank sync. The apps built for this (TravelSpend, Trail Wallet) are simple but limited. DrakeAI's text-input approach is flexible enough to handle any currency while giving you better analytics on the backend.
