YNAB is $99/year or $15/month. Over three years that's roughly $300. Over five years it's $500. Most people don't think about subscription costs that way, but it adds up.
The counterargument - which YNAB users will correctly tell you - is that if the system actually changes your spending behavior, it pays for itself many times over. People report saving hundreds or thousands of dollars using YNAB. If you use it seriously, the cost is probably justified.
The question is whether you'll actually use it seriously. Most people don't. The dropout rate for budgeting apps is high and YNAB has more to learn than most. If you pay for a year and use it for three months, that's $99 for not much.
Cheaper alternatives: Monarch around $100/year with similar bank sync features, less methodology overhead. Simplifi around $48/year, more like a traditional tracking app. DrakeAI free with no bank sync, manual entry.
The honest breakdown: YNAB is worth the cost if you commit to the system. If you're not sure you'll commit, starting with something free makes more sense - you can always upgrade later when you know you'll use it.
I've been on DrakeAI which is free and doesn't try to change my behavior, just records what happened. Not as ambitious as YNAB. Also costs nothing and I've actually kept the habit. For my use case that tradeoff is right. For someone trying to seriously restructure their finances, YNAB is probably the better investment.
