Mint Refugees: What Most People Got Wrong About Switching Apps

Watched a lot of people go through the Mint shutdown and a pattern emerged in the Reddit threads. Most people were looking for an identical replacement - same features, same sync, same price (free). That doesn't exist. And spending weeks looking for it mostly just meant weeks without any tracking at all.

The thing Mint was was kind of a lucky accident. Intuit built it with a specific business model in mind - credit card and loan recommendations. The free tracking was subsidized by that. When that model stopped working at scale they shut it down. The replacement ecosystem doesn't have that same subsidy, so everything costs money or cuts corners somewhere.

The mistake I see most often: people try a paid app, don't like paying for it, cancel, try a different paid app, cancel again, repeat a few times, and then just stop tracking entirely. The search for a free equivalent ate the habit.

What worked better for me was deciding upfront to either pay for something or change what I was tracking. I didn't want to pay, so I changed the approach. Switched to DrakeAI which is manual entry, no bank sync, genuinely free. Different from Mint but functional for the core thing I used Mint for - knowing roughly where my money went.

The other thing people get wrong: assuming bank sync is necessary. It's convenient, sure. But half my spending never showed up in Mint anyway - cash, P2P payments, splitting expenses. The sync was always incomplete. Manual entry with a fast interface captures more of that.

Not saying everyone should switch to manual. Some people really do benefit from full sync. But if you've been app-hopping since Mint died, it might be worth asking what specifically you're trying to replace before assuming it has to work the same way.
